New boating inspection rules take effect Friday
Trying to keep certain types of mussels out of New Mexico
By Sasha LenningerALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —New Mexico Game and Fish is rolling out several new boating inspection rules aimed at keeping pests out of New Mexico lakes. They said certain types of mussels from out of state can cause big problems.
Starting Friday, New Mexico Game and Fish will check all boats coming in from out of state for zebra and quagga mussels. They said the smelly mussels are the size of a fingernail, are really sharp and can leave you with some nasty cuts.
On top of that, they are a nuisance for boaters and other equipment.
“They can choke out native species of mussels or other species of life in the water but the biggest impacts are to the infrastructures. They clog damns and irrigation pipes. So everybody that is relying on the water transfer is going to have to deal with these things,” said James Dominguez with New Mexico Game and Fish.

Nevada guardsman dies in Pyramid Lake boating accident
A Nevada National Guardsman was found after he recently died in a boating accident at Pyramid Lake.
Senior Airman Michael Anthony Beaton, 26, was a member of the 152nd Maintenance Squadron of the Nevada Air National Guard, officials said in a news release.
Another boater spotted Beaton’s unoccupied truck Monday night near the lake’s shoreline at Popcorn Beach and noticed the driver never returned, said Don Pelt, emergency response coordinator for the Pyramid Lake Fire Rescue/EMS.

AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is reminding everyone to take advantage of the upcoming free fishing weekend.
On Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14, any person may fish for free without a license on Maine’s waterways, except those who have had their license suspended or revoked. All other rules and regulations, including bag and possession limits, apply.
“Fishing during the winter is a wonderful way to get out of the house and make memories with family and friends that are sure to last a long time,” said Governor Paul R. LePage.“We offer this free fishing weekend in the hopes that more and more people will be introduced to the many winter fishing opportunities Maine offers, particularly on our frozen lakes and ponds. And remember, safety first. Please check the condition of the ice before you go out.”

We spent two weeks at the Orlando thousand trails RV park in January 2016. It is located in southwest of Orlando in Clermont Florida. ... about a 30 minute drive from Disney and 45 minutes into the city. There is a Walmart down the street and plenty of shopping amenities nearby.
The park is the largest campground we have ever been in with almost 900 sites! The sites were large and easy to access even with a large fifth wheel or class A Motorhome. Most of the campground is located in open areas with sparse trees, however one section is forested where you have trees between sites. All of the roads are paved and many of the sites offer paved parking or a cement slab.
Most of the sites were 30 amp full hookup, with some 50 amp available. One of there newest selections was all 50 amp but cost an additional 3 dollars per night to stay there. There are a few cabins available to rent onsite and small upscale trailer homes with full time residents.

A 49-year-old Irish woman who died after the luxury boat she was sailing in was ripped apart by rocks off South Africa's Western Cape has been named as Rachel Daly.
A Scottish man George Mills (61) was also killed, while it is understood Ms Daly's husband PJ Daly - also from Ireland - was injured when local yacht the 'Tara' ran aground.
They were the only three people on board the vessel at the time.
All three are said to be resident in the Western Cape area.
The incident occurred between Bokpunt and Gansekraal off the west coast during the early hours of yesterday.
Three rescue crews and police dive teams responded to the incident shortly after 4.30am local time.

UPDATE, 1:30 p.m.: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says the search for two missing boaters on Lake Okeechobee continues.
John Russ, 72, and his wife, Diane Russ, 62, both of Myakka City, went on a boating trip near Bird Island, using a Panther airboat. They were reported overdue from the trip on Saturday night. FWC officials, along with Glades County Sheriff’s deputies and the U.S. Coast Guard have conducted a search since that time.

MANATEE CO., FL (WFLA) — A young Tampa Bay area boy can credit the quick thinking and fast action of Boy Scouts for helping him and his father after a boating accident.
The father and son left a Manatee County boat ramp on Saturday for what they thought would be a day of fun on the Manatee River.
But less than a mile into their trip their boat hit an object in the water. The boat flipped, sending the father and son into the river.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 36 is hosting a safe boating class Saturday at Spanish River Park.
The safe boating class is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and topics include boating terminology, boat handling, navigation rules, aids to navigation, federal and state regulations, and safety equipment.
Everyone who completes the class is given a certificate and will be sent a Florida Boating ID card.
The class is $35, and is held in the headquarters building of the park, 3939 N. Ocean Blvd. Attendees are encouraged to bring lunch.

The March 1 trout park opener may be the first fishing event of the year that grabs media attention, but as winter fades into spring, many area anglers are focused on another popular sportfish.
For many Ozarks fishing folks, early March is time to get excited about walleye fishing. This popular member of the perch family, which many anglers say is the finest eating of freshwater gamefish, begins to spawn in early March. This spawning period, which usually runs into April, sends many anglers to local lakes in search of this prized catch.
People can learn more about walleye at the free Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) program “Walleye Fishing” on Feb. 10 at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center. The program will be 7-8:30 p.m.

Well-stocked state lakes give kids and amateur anglers an
excellent chance of success on small waters, often close to home
There's no question that fishing on private lakes is often better than the action available on big public lakes like those in the TVA chain.
The fish in many of these lakes don't see many lures compared to the constant pounding they get in a hard-fished lake like Guntersville or Pickwick, and that makes them a whole lot easier to catch.
In late winter, small lakes also have the advantage of warming up considerably faster than the bigger waters if the sun cooperates, and that turns on the pre-spawn action weeks ahead of time.

The incident happened at Indian Hills Lake. Officials say that a 1994 Aweld boat traveling southbound made an abrupt turn, causing the driver and a passenger to be ejected from the boat. The boat struck a dock before coming to a stop. The driver of the boat was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials identify the victim as 51 year-old Roger Farrar of Cuba. This is Troop I’s first water fatality of the year.

gives his first perch a kiss Wednesday morning out on the Helena Valley Regulation Reservoir for the hands-on portion of the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Hooked on Fishing program.
As the first perch rose from the ice hole and flopped in the snow, a 50-voice chorus rang out across the Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir.
“Kiss it, kiss it, kiss it!”
And with schools of ravenous perch eager to bite the swarm of lures dancing beneath the surface, plenty of Broadwater Elementary fourth and fifth graders had the opportunity to pucker up at the urging of their classmates.
The day was part of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ Hooked on Fishing program, which uses fish and fishing as part of a larger curriculum for students across the state. On Wednesday, Broadwater students had their chance to learn on a frozen classroom, gaining some firsthand knowledge of the reservoir’s fish population as well as some specimens for future dissection.

THE BRONX (PIX11) -- They were fishing for stolen mail, but they ended being the ones who got caught — by cops.Three suspects were arrested last week after officers observed them hanging around mailboxes on a number of corners in the Bronx early in the morning.
NYPD released a picture of the "fishing poles" they were using to try to snag mail — and whatever money and valuable information might be in it.
In the Bedford Park and Norwood sections of the Bronx, neighbors have been advised that suspects are taking water bottles, tying a string around them, and covering them with sticky glue or fly paper to fish envelopes from mailboxes.

A capsized catamaran found off Aghulas in South Africa is probably a Sunsail catamaran that has been missing for a year.
Sunsail has confirmed that it believes a catamaran, found capsized at sea 40 miles off Cape Aghulas at the southern tip of South Africa, is the Sunsail catamaran that was reported missing in Febrauary 2015.

January 27, 2016 10:43 PMMIAMI (CBSMiami) – A man involved a quadruple fatal boating crash has been acquitted of all three misdemeanor infractions he faced.
The accident happened back in 2014 on the 4th of July.
Andrew Garcia, 23, was steering his 32 foot T-topped fishing boat to the marina when he broadsided a 33 foot pleasure craft being piloted by Elias Michael Hanono, 31.
Garcia’s boat, with no one any longer at the helm, went on to collide with a third vessel.

While on the beach, I had always wondered if a person could toss a line into the surf and catch something worthwhile.
So, when I was recently invited to fish from the beach and was told we would likely be bringing home supper, I of course jumped, and then promptly waded, at the opportunity.
As the foam-laden waves smacked against my legs, I was pleasantly surprised that it was not only exciting but quite fun trying to dodge the incoming surf as I fished the tide. I knew this was likely a good location not only because of the beach contours but the audience of a bobbing sea lion nearby. Not too long after my first cast, I hollered “Fish on!”

Look for changes in wind speed and direction, temperature drops, rapidly accumulating clouds and even a stronger salty odor to assess the weather conditions.
The outboard on the back of my 17-foot Boston Whaler started after a few cranks, and I eased away from the dock ready for a day on the water. The fuel gauge read zero, the speedometer was disconnected from the pitot tube, and the chart plotter sat unplugged in its mount. The handheld GPS? Locked safely in the glove compartment of my car in the marina parking lot. All in all, it was shaping up to be a perfect day on the water.
How’s that, you say? The idea of boating without 21st-century amenities seems like a daunting concept in the age of NMEA 2000, fully integrated systems and joystick controls. But I wanted to prove that seamanship still counts — big time — in spending a day on the water.

“As the Top 100 enters its second decade, the dealers on this year's list are healthier than they have been in years,” said Boating Industry editor-in-chief Jonathan Sweet. “The 2015 Top 100 and Hall of Fame topped $2.5 billion in total sales -- the highest total for the Top 100 since 2008."
Earning Dealer of the Year honors for the second year in a row was Gordy’s Lakefront Marine of Fontana, Wis.
"After achieving Dealer of the Year honors the first time, Gordy’s followed that up with a record year for sales and profits in 2014," Sweet said. "The dealership continues to grow and create opportunities for its team members, recognizing that they are the people who truly make any company excel. Simply put, even as Gordy’s celebrated its 60th year in business, they just continue to get better."
