Missing Sunsail Yacht Found After A Year

A capsized catamaran found off Aghulas in South Africa is probably a Sunsail catamaran that has been missing for a year.

Sunsail has confirmed that it believes a catamaran, found capsized at sea 40 miles off Cape Aghulas at the southern tip of South Africa, is the Sunsail catamaran that was reported missing in Febrauary 2015.

Sunsail said in a statement:
On 18 January, Sunsail received notification from MRCC that on  a Brazilian navy ship had sighted an upturned vessel in the Indian Ocean, off the southern coast of South Africa. On Saturday 23 January, the vessel was sighted again and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Agulhas duty crew launched a lifeboat. On arrival, the NSRI took photographs and NSRI rescue swimmers free dived to investigate markings on the yacht and, to the extent possible, explore under the hull.

January 27, 2016 10:43 PM

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A man involved a quadruple fatal boating crash has been acquitted of all three misdemeanor infractions he faced.

The accident happened back in 2014 on the 4th of July.
Andrew Garcia, 23, was steering his 32 foot T-topped fishing boat to the marina when he broadsided a 33 foot pleasure craft being piloted by Elias Michael Hanono, 31.

Garcia’s boat, with no one any longer at the helm, went on to collide with a third vessel.

There are sooooo many apps out there.*  But here’s one app created by the U.S. Coast Guard that you should seriously consider if you spend time in a boat.

As the nation’s recreational boating safety coordinator, the Coast Guard’s mission is to minimize loss of life, personal injury, property damage, and environmental harm.

Their boating safety app program involves public education programs, regulation of boat design and construction, approval of boating safety equipment, and vessel safety checks for compliance with federal and state safety requirements.

The Coast Guard Mobile App supports these missions by providing the essential safety services and information most commonly requested by boaters.

Fishing the tide

Fishing the tide.

By Troy Rodakowski

While on the beach, I had always wondered if a person could toss a line into the surf and catch something worthwhile.

So, when I was recently invited to fish from the beach and was told we would likely be bringing home supper, I of course jumped, and then promptly waded, at the opportunity.

As the foam-laden waves smacked against my legs, I was pleasantly surprised that it was not only exciting but quite fun trying to dodge the incoming surf as I fished the tide. I knew this was likely a good location not only because of the beach contours but the audience of a bobbing sea lion nearby. Not too long after my first cast, I hollered “Fish on!”

Warm water fly fishing tips

Warm Water Fly Fishing at the Core

When you decide to do something that not many people are doing you end up with a steep learning curve most of the time. So it is with warm water fly fishing. Although the sport goes way back in time, it has nowhere near the following of its counterparts, making it difficult to find insightful information to help you get on your way. Revisiting some of the most basic elements of fishing will help you become a better warm water fly fisherman.

Fly fishing a lake for warm water species is as much a puzzle as is fly fishing trout in a river, just in a different box. With knowledge of the lake environment, the habits of the species you are after, and the dynamics of the food sources these fish focus on you can attack a lake much like you would a river.

In this article I will cover three basic tips that you can apply to most warm water species, and will help you at least go to a lake with an understanding of what is most important to know when trying to hook warm water fish. The three main elements are location of the fish, food sources of the fish, and the presentation of these food sources.

How to boat without modern technology

Boating without modern technology proves that seamanship still counts.

By Pete McDonald

Tim Bower

Look for changes in wind speed and direction, temperature drops, rapidly accumulating clouds and even a stronger salty odor to assess the weather conditions.

The outboard on the back of my 17-foot Boston Whaler started after a few cranks, and I eased away from the dock ready for a day on the water. The fuel gauge read zero, the speedometer was disconnected from the pitot tube, and the chart plotter sat unplugged in its mount. The handheld GPS? Locked safely in the glove compartment of my car in the marina parking lot. All in all, it was shaping up to be a perfect day on the water.

How’s that, you say? The idea of boating without 21st-century amenities seems like a daunting concept in the age of NMEA 2000, fully integrated systems and joystick controls. But I wanted to prove that seamanship still counts — big time — in spending a day on the water.

Top 100 Dealers

Top 100 Boating Dealers

Boating Industry announced the 11th annual list of Top 100 dealers at a black tie gala November 18 in Orlando.

“As the Top 100 enters its second decade, the dealers on this year's list are healthier than they have been in years,” said Boating Industry editor-in-chief Jonathan Sweet. “The 2015 Top 100 and Hall of Fame topped $2.5 billion in total sales -- the highest total for the Top 100 since 2008."

Earning Dealer of the Year honors for the second year in a row was Gordy’s Lakefront Marine of Fontana, Wis.

"After achieving Dealer of the Year honors the first time, Gordy’s followed that up with a record year for sales and profits in 2014," Sweet said. "The dealership continues to grow and create opportunities for its team members, recognizing that they are the people who truly make any company excel. Simply put, even as Gordy’s celebrated its 60th year in business, they just continue to get better."

How to build a boat

                                    How to Build a Boat

By

The following article will not teach you how to build a boat from start to finish but instead will allow you to make design considerations so that you get the small details correct. Typically these tips should be used towards the end of a boat building project as they are simply additions and maintenance considerations..

Top 4 ways to avoid your boat sinking in the spring

1. If your sailing or power boat has a stuffing box then you need to make sure that the seal to the prop shaft is not too tight as this will create a dripping of water. This will usually be a very small flow of water, however if your boat is left on the lake or harbor for long periods of time without any supervision at all then it could very easily become a problem. Many boat owners have come back to their boathouse after a winter to find their boat fully submerged due to this very problem. Make sure that you inspect the stuffing box on a regular basis as it keeps your boat afloat in the long run.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Until last weekend, it has been a warm winter and many Iowans have appreciated it. The unseasonably high temperatures have prevented many, however, from enjoying a winter staple, ice fishing.

“I can’t remember it being this warm during my time with department,” says Chris Clingan, Park Ranger with Polk County. “The last time I remember there being open water in January, it was ‘97 or ‘98.”

Boat handling tips

Five Great Boat Handling Tips From a Photo-Boat Driver

Five seamanship skills learned while driving on the edge to get the shot.

By Rick Honish

My longtime photographer-friend and mentor, Mike Fuller, is leaning out over the photo boat’s bow rail 12 feet in front of me, gesticulating with his hands and flashing a big grin to the driver and passenger of the boat that’s running 25 mph just inches off my port side. My eyes are on Fuller for only a second, but my concern for his well-being is at an all-time high. My peripheral vision keeps tabs on his footing and his stance while my primary focus shifts to the proximity of the riverbank streaking by. My eyes pan back to the small jet boat now tucked a mere inch or two under the spread of our bow. I’m locked in. One wrong move by me and we all could be in for a very bad day.

For me, it’s just another day at the office. I am a photo-boat captain. My clients consist of boat builders, engine manufacturers and various outdoor product lines. The demands of the photographers, clients and environments in which I operate have chiseled me into a paranoid boater. The slightest errors can result in lost shots and lost time. Bigger errors can cost thousands of dollars and garner the attention of insurance companies. Success comes from proper training, years of experience and a good dose of telepathy. The lessons are not always learned the easy way. The following is a checklist of five that matter most and will make you a better boater.

Towing has been around long before yachting

Towing has been around long before yachting

This letter is in response to the Owner’s View column in The Triton, and is aimed precisely at the captain who opposes towing and claims “the most knowledgeable” surveyors and insurance adjusters will back him up. [“Owner’s gain, crew’s pain when yacht tows tender,” page 6, October issue.]

Towing, like any marine endeavor, requires preparation. Both the tow and the towing vessel need to be set up properly. Also, the crew manning one or both vessels need to be trained and familiar with the required equipment and procedures to tow safely and securely. This includes any surveyors or insurance adjusters involved, of which there are many of both.

Fish are happier in cool water

Bridge passage tip: Navigating Bridges

                             Boating Tip: Bridge Passage

BOB PLOTKIN/CONTRIBUTED PHOTO The railroad bridge across the St. Lucie River is one of many bridges Treasure Coast boaters must traverse when boating here.

Navigating Bridges

Traveling the inland waterways is a pleasant experience with a few special challenges, especially for larger boats and sailboats. Know what to do when approaching a bridge.

Know the boat's vertical clearance. It is illegal to cause an unnecessary bridge opening.

Know a bridge's minimum clearance. Many charts indicate it, but a clearance board for the bridge will be on the right side of the channel.

Know a bridge's operating hours and preferred method of contact.

Pass through a bridge at idle speed.
Sound signal bridge, if necessary, with one long horn blast, followed 3 seconds later by one short blast. The bridge will respond. A "No" signal from the bridge will be five short blasts.

Two days later, in Natchitoches Parish, another boater was ejected when he struck a tree. He was unresponsive when picked up by boaters on another vessel, but was wearing a life jacket, and was transported for medical attention.

Hilton Head Island Considers Restricting Summer Fishing

Beach patrols, lifeguards already police during “peak-person” times

The town of Hilton Head Island is considering banning fishing from the beach during the summer.
Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach already have laws on the books regarding beach fishing, and both cities allow beach patrols to regulate fishing during peak activity times. Some Hilton Head council members are worried that fishing on the beach might attract sharks to shallow water. The proposal would ban fishing on the beaches from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

High Water Boating Cautions For North Alabama Anglers.

High Water Boating Cautions For North Alabama Anglers.

By Frank Sargeant, The Huntsville Times AL.com
on January 06, 2016 at 1:56 AM, updated January 06, 2016 at 1:57 AM

Caption: High performance bass boats give a safe, smooth ride at speed in most conditions, but it's wise to slow down when there's floating debris present, as there is in most lakes in North Alabama these days thanks to recent flooding.

High speed bass boats and floating debris do not play well together--but right now there are many tons of flotsam littering the surface of all the TVA lakes thanks to the high water. The flood waters float debris that has been stacked on shore for months, and as the water begins to fall back to normal levels, all this debris is pulled back into the navigable areas to become dangerous obstructions for boaters.

African Countries Call for China to Stop Illegal Fishing

African Countries Call for China to Stop Illegal Fishing

Officials from 24 African countries met in Cameroon last month and called for China to stop illegal fishing off the West African coast. In some areas, Chinese fishermen have pushed their local counterparts back to shore, depriving them of their jobs and livelihoods.

Former fisherman Bisso Frederick, 32, now sells sandwiches in the Cameroonian town of Limbe, on the West African coast. He says he and his colleagues were forced to abandon their jobs three years ago.

Bisso says they have lost their jobs to Chinese fishermen who have taken over all fishing areas. He says they are very worried the government of Cameroon has allowed foreigners to do little jobs Cameroonians should have been doing.

In a 2013 study, the international environmental group Greenpeace reported that the number of Chinese fishing boats operating in African waters soared from 13 in 1985 to 462 in 2013.
The report said there were 114 cases of illegal fishing over an eight-year period in the waters off Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Senegal and Sierra Leone. It said the boats were operating without licenses or in prohibited areas.

Biologists hope fishing will end carp invasion

Biologists hope fishing will end carp invasion

The common carp have created an out-of-balance ecosystem

BURNS, Ore. (AP) — Malheur National Wildlife Refuge managers say they’re hoping a commercial fishing endeavor will curb a carp invasion at the migratory bird sanctuary south of Burns.

The Oregonian reports the common carp have created an out-of-balance ecosystem that no longer supports the plant and insect life birds rely upon for food and habitat.

The refuge has partnered with the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation and the owner of Pacific Foods, a Tualatin company best known for boxed soup and soymilk, to begin a massive carp commercial fishing operation.

By spring 2016, the team hopes to begin removing thousands of fish from the water each day.
The meat, which most Americans won’t eat, will be used to fertilize crops.
