   Well-stocked state lakes give kids and amateur anglers an
excellent chance of success on small waters, often close to home
 
There's no question that fishing on private lakes is often better than the action available on big public lakes like those in the TVA chain.
 
The fish in many of these lakes don't see many lures compared to the constant pounding they get in a hard-fished lake like Guntersville or Pickwick, and that makes them a whole lot easier to catch.
           
 In late winter, small lakes also have the advantage of warming up considerably faster than the bigger waters if the sun cooperates, and that turns on the pre-spawn action weeks ahead of time.
