Elementary students hooked on fishing

Hooked on Fishing: Broadwater Elementary students learn on the lake.

gives his first perch a kiss Wednesday morning out on the Helena Valley Regulation Reservoir for the hands-on portion of the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Hooked on Fishing program.


As the first perch rose from the ice hole and flopped in the snow, a 50-voice chorus rang out across the Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir.

“Kiss it, kiss it, kiss it!”

And with schools of ravenous perch eager to bite the swarm of lures dancing beneath the surface, plenty of Broadwater Elementary fourth and fifth graders had the opportunity to pucker up at the urging of their classmates.

The day was part of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ Hooked on Fishing program, which uses fish and fishing as part of a larger curriculum for students across the state. On Wednesday, Broadwater students had their chance to learn on a frozen classroom, gaining some firsthand knowledge of the reservoir’s fish population as well as some specimens for future dissection.
